India’s imitation jewellery exports surge 74% in April-Sep 2026

Surat: India’s imitation jewellery exports grew by 74.52% in the first half of FY2026-27, extending the steady rise seen across each month of the April–Sep period, helped by stronger demand from the US and Europe for affordable, fashion-driven products.Gross exports of imitation jewellery rose to $54.96 million during April–Sep 2026, compared with $31.49 million in the same period a year earlier, reflecting an increase in overseas orders and improved manufacturing capacity within the sector.Industry members attributed the momentum to shifting global trade dynamics, particularly higher US tariffs on Chinese-origin fashion jewellery. “China is the single biggest exporter of imitation jewellery in the world. The total effective tariff on imitation or fashion jewellery imported from China into the US in 2026 is up to 38.5%. From India it’s only 10%,” said an industry expert in Mumbai, adding that the tariff gap appears to be diverting orders to Indian suppliers.Exports from India to the US more than doubled over the six-month period, rising by 104% from about $12 million to $24 million, according to industry estimates. Exporters said the US remains the largest growth driver, with demand strengthening in European markets where consumers are seeking value-priced accessories aligned with fast-changing fashion trends.Market participants cited additional tailwinds including substitution towards non-precious jewellery as bullion prices rise, expanded design capabilities and broad-based demand growth in key markets such as the US, France, Spain, the UK and Hong Kong.Manufacturing growth is also spreading beyond established clusters. “Not only cities like Rajkot and Jaipur cities but in rural parts around these cities are growing as imitation jewellery hubs. Many small units are opening in rural areas and they are doing quality work,” said Dinesh Navadiya, chairperson, Indian Diamond Institute (IDI).Exporters said improvements in finish, plating, and consistency are supporting repeat orders and helping India strengthen its position in the global fashion jewellery supply chain.
