ACB traps Class-2 engineer, aide for taking bribe

Surat: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday caught a contractual assistant engineer of the Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation Ltd accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 in Surat. A deputy executive engineer (Class-2) of the corporation was also arrested after allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 to process a govt contract bill.According to the ACB, the complainant had undertaken construction of a compound wall under a govt tender. The accused allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from the complainant for processing and sanctioning payment of the bill related to the work. Following negotiations, the amount was settled at Rs 40,000.Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the ACB. A trap was subsequently laid by police inspector K J Dhaduk and his team on Thursday.During the operation, contractual assistant engineer Nayan Baldaniya, posted at the sub-divisional office of the Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation Ltd in Navsari, allegedly demanded and accepted Rs 40,000 from the complainant. He was caught red-handed and the bribe amount was recovered by the ACB.During investigation, deputy executive engineer Brijesh Gondaliya, who is posted at the same office, was also apprehended in connection with the alleged bribery offence.An offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered and the ACB has launched a probe to determine whether the accused duo had demanded bribes from other contractors as well.
