Woman, lover’s ‘accident’ story collapses as autopsy exposes murder
Two accused persons in police custody

Surat: What was initially reported as a fatal fall from a second-floor house in Surat’s Chowk Bazar area turned out to be a meticulously planned murder, with a postmortem report exposing a gruesome attempt to cover up the crime.A 30-year-old woman and her 28-year-old lover were arrested on Monday for allegedly throwing her 42-year-old husband from the second floor of their residence and later slitting his throat with a blade to ensure his death. The accused, identified as Chandani Kumari Upadhyay and her lover Shulabh Singh Bumm, allegedly tried to portray the death of Janmajay Kumar Tirth Ray as an accident after his body was found outside their house in Rehmanagar Society on June 8.However, the postmortem report raised suspicion after revealing deep cuts on Ray’s throat. Doctors concluded that he died due to shock caused by excessive haemorrhage following a cut-throat injury.Following the revelation, Chowk Bazar police launched a detailed investigation. Since the body was found outside the victim’s residence, investigators focused on the surroundings of the house and examined CCTV footage from nearby areas. The footage showed suspicious movement of an unidentified man near the residence around the time of the incident. Neighbours, however, could not identify him, prompting police to question Chandani in detail.During sustained interrogation, Chandani allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed her lover’s involvement, siad police.According to police, Chandani and Bumm had been in a relationship for nearly two years. Investigators said Chandani was unhappy after learning that Ray had concealed his previous marriage from her. Police also said that Ray had allegedly assaulted her on multiple occasions. Chandani knew Bumm from the time he lived near her rented residence, and the two reportedly reconnected at a market, exchanged phone numbers and later began an affair.“Both had decided to eliminate Ray. In the early hours of June 8, when he was asleep, Chandani called Bumm to the house. They pushed Ray from the second floor. When they realised he was still alive, Bumm used a blade to slit his throat to make sure he died,” a police officer said. The Chowk Bazar police have arrested both accused and are further investigating the case.
