Surat: Heavy overnight rain lashed Surat, inundating roads, railway underpasses and residential areas across the city, leaving commuters stranded and residents grappling with waterlogged neighbourhoods on Sunday monring. Most of the rainfall was recorded between midnight and 8am on Sunday, with several low-lying areas remaining flooded through the day.According to the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) zone-wise rainfall data for the 22-hour period between 10pm on Saturday and 8pm on Sunday, the South Zone received the highest rainfall at 125mm. The South West Zone recorded 90mm, followed by South East Zone with 82mm, Central Zone with 78mm and East A Zone with 52mm.The overnight downpour led to widespread waterlogging in several parts of the city, forcing many residents to wake up to flooded streets and disrupted movement. Areas including Udhna, Vesu, Althan, Dindoli, Limbayat, Sachin and Bhestan were among the worst affected.The railway underpass near Udhna railway station was submerged after the heavy rain, affecting vehicular movement. A railway underpass in the Sachin area also went under water, causing inconvenience to commuters.In Vesu, rainwater entered the basements of several residential and commercial complexes, damaging property and creating difficulties for occupants. Residents alleged that despite repeatedly raising complaints with the civic body officials about inadequate drainage and recurring flooding, no lasting solution was implemented.
