Surat: With demand for sweets and other festive delicacies expected to surge ahead of Diwali, the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) food safety department has intensified inspections across the city to ensure food quality and compliance with safety standards. On Tuesday, officials inspected 16 outlets selling sweets and collected 31 samples of sweets and desserts for laboratory testing. The drive also covered several popular sweet shops as part of routine checks to prevent the sale of substandard or unsafe food products during the festive season, when residents buy sweets in large quantities. In a separate enforcement action on Monday, the food safety department, in coordination with the police, conducted a joint inspection at Ms Amrut Milk and Milk Products on New Bamroli Road, near Tirupati Circle. Officials collected paneer samples from the premises and issued notices over hygiene-related deficiencies observed during the inspection. The team also seized 398 kg of low-fat paneer, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 1.11 lakh.Officials said the collected paneer samples have been sent to a laboratory for testing, with results expected within the next couple of days. Further action will be taken based on the laboratory findings and the establishment’s compliance with applicable food safety regulations.
