Surat: The proposed Centre for Perishable Cargo (CPC) at Surat International Airport emerged as a key priority during a meeting between the Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Limited (GAICL) and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI). The discussions focused on creating a faster, safer and technology-driven air-export system for perishable and time-sensitive products from south Gujarat.SGCCI president Ashok Jirawala said Surat airport should move beyond being primarily a passenger facility and develop into a major air-cargo and logistics hub. He pointed to the region’s strong agricultural, horticultural and marine production, with products such as mangoes, chikoo and shrimp having significant demand in Gulf countries, the US, Europe and Japan.The proposed CPC is expected to include modern cold-chain infrastructure, specialised storage and dedicated handling facilities for perishable cargo. Such infrastructure would enable exporters to ship fresh produce and seafood directly from Surat instead of relying on airports in Mumbai or Ahmedabad.Direct air cargo connectivity could reduce transit time, help maintain product freshness and quality, lower logistics-related challenges and potentially improve returns for farmers and exporters.SGCCI aviation committee chairperson Linesh Shah described the CPC as an important step towards establishing Surat as a stronger cargo hub and creating new opportunities for exporters across south Gujarat.
