Surat: Three migrant workers were killed and one was critically injured after they plunged to the ground from a height of 50 feet when the motorcycle they were on hit the parapet wall of a rail overbridge (ROB) near Kudsad village in Surat district late Tuesday night.The accident occurred around 11pm when the four youths were travelling on a two-wheeler. The motorcycle hit the bridge’s safety wall while negotiating a turn, causing the riders to be thrown off the bridge. Passersby who alerted the authorities told police that they first noticed the motorcycle on the bridge but did not see anyone there. On checking the ground below, they saw the victims.One of them fell into a field, while the others landed outside the field on the road, police said. All four suffered multiple fractures and were to hospital. Three were declared dead by doctors, while the fourth was admitted in a critical condition to New Civil Hospital in Surat.The deceased are Saurabh Yadav (18), Vikas Chhotelal Varma (18) and Vikas Hiralal Varma (20). The survivor, Abhishek Varma, who was driving the motorcycle, is undergoing treatment, police said.A complaint has been lodged at Kim police station by Vishal Varma, the older brother of Vikas Hiralal Varma.Police said all the victims were from Uttar Pradesh and worked as labourers in textile weaving units here.Investigators are examining the exact cause of the crash, including whether the rider lost control while taking the turn or whether another vehicle hit the motorcycle. Police said the accident occurred late at night when heavy vehicle movement is typically low, and efforts are underway to trace more eyewitnesses and gather more information.
