Brief wet spell leaves roads waterlogged again
Residents accused the civic body of failing to prevent a repeat of street inundation

Surat: Barely 10 days after floods crippled Surat, a spell of moderate rain on Friday once again left several roads waterlogged, exposing the city’s fragile drainage infrastructure and triggering fresh criticism of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).Residents took to social media to share videos of flooded roads and accused the civic body of failing to prevent a repeat of street inundation despite measures initiated after last week’s floods.Waterlogging was reported not only in traditionally low-lying areas but also in prominent localities such as Vesu, New City Light and Althan. Roads were submerged and water entered basements of some buildings within minutes of rainfall. Commuters were caught off guard as water quickly accumulated on key stretches, leaving vehicles stranded. Several two-wheeler riders were seen navigating flooded roads by riding on footpaths.Surat city received 13mm of rain over four hours between 2 pm and 6 pm. Residents said the disruption caused by such moderate rainfall exposed shortcomings in the city’s stormwater drainage system and raised questions about the effectiveness of the civic body’s post-flood clean-up and preparedness.Businessman Pamir Shah shared a video from a commercial complex in Vesu, alleging that recurring waterlogging was severely affecting businesses. He said the basement of the complex was inundated during the July 7-8 floods and remained shut for more than five days as civic authorities failed to pump out the water. He also alleged that garbage outside the complex remained uncleared for several days.Elsewhere in Surat district, Kamrej received 54mm of rainfall between 2pm and 8pm, while Palsana recorded 36mm since 6 am and Bardoli 25mm.In Valsad district, Kaprada recorded 85mm of rainfall during the day, followed by Nana Pondha with 37mm and Dharampur with 26mm. Khergam in Navsari district received 52mm, while Valia in Bharuch district recorded 25mm.
