Surat: A detection of crime branch (DCB) officer shot an alleged gang member in the leg on Thursday after he reportedly attacked police personnel and tried to snatch a sub-inspector’s pistol while being taken for investigation in a firearms case.The injured accused, Jayesh Wagh alias Barku Patil, is associated with the Maniya Dukkar gang and faces more than 35 criminal cases, including murder, robbery, attempted murder and extortion, police said.Deputy commissioner of police Bhavesh Roziya said police had recently arrested Maniya Dukkar alias Sagar Sonawane in the Jay Dalal murder case.“Sonawane confessed to having procured three firearms with the help of Jayesh Wagh. We recovered the three pistols at various places and arrested Wagh from Lajpore jail in the evening. When the arresting party reached Budiya village in the Sachin GIDC area, Wagh complained about health issues and asked for the car to be stopped,” Roziya said.According to police, after the vehicle stopped, Wagh allegedly attacked the police team and tried to snatch the service pistol of sub-inspector Shailesh Dubey.“When police stopped the car, he exploited the opportunity to attack the policemen. He tried to snatch the pistol of sub-inspector Shailesh Dubey. In self-defence, Dubey shot Wagh as he was attempting to flee. Wagh was hit by the bullet in the leg and was taken to Civil Hospital for treatment,” Roziya said.Police said Wagh had been lodged in Lajpore jail in connection with an attempted murder case registered in Limbayat.
