Surat: Surat witnessed widespread waterlogging on Friday even as the city did not receive heavy rain. Creeks overflowed after intense rainfall in the district, pushing floodwater into low-lying neighbourhoods and leaving roads submerged in multiple pockets. Tapi river was flowing bank to bank due to heavy inflow from upstream catchments.Ukai dam level rose sharply by 4.58 feet in the last 18 hours amid heavy upstream rainfall in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. By 6 pm on Aug 1, the reservoir level reached 323.96 feet against the seasonal rule level of 333 feet. Inflow was reported at 4,89,030 cusecs, while 800 cusecs was being released, with authorities monitoring the situation closely.Waterlogging was reported in Ichhapore and surrounding areas, where police teams maintained a watch at vulnerable points. In Limbayat, floodwaters from Mithi creek entered residential localities, prompting field teams of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and police to issue public announcements. Residents were asked to remain alert and move valuables to safer places, preferably at least to the first floor. Low-lying parts of Bhathena also saw water entering homes and streets.Saroli remained flooded for hours as water blocked a few roads, affecting local movement. Police teams continued monitoring waterlogged stretches to prevent accidents and assist residents. Civic teams worked to clear drainage lines and facilitate faster water discharge as levels fluctuated.According to SMC, waterlogging was reported at 77 locations across Surat city. Of these, water had been completely drained from 62 locations by evening, with dewatering operations continuing in the remaining areas. As a precaution, 2,391 residents from low-lying areas were shifted to relief centres, while 2,943 footpath residents were moved to night shelters.Medical arrangements were made at 12 relief centres. Health teams examined 898 people and provided on-the-spot treatment to 87, officials said.In neighbouring Navsari district, soil near the wall of Vaghrecha tidal dam was washed away in Kaveri river near Gandevi, and water entered Vaghrech village.Surat fire teams conduct rescue in KimHeavy rainfall in Surat district triggered severe waterlogging in several villages of Kim, leaving many residents stranded in floodwaters. Fire Control Room received alerts through the 112 emergency service reporting people trapped across multiple locations near Kim. Surat Municipal Corporation Fire and Emergency Services mobilised a special rescue unit from Emergency Response Centre in Kamrej, in addition to 16 rescue teams already deployed within city limits.Fire officers and personnel carried out continuous rescue operations under dangerous conditions in areas including Kothwa village, Navi Naroli, Kosamba, Kuwarada, Hathoda village near Tulsi Hotel, and other impacted locations. Around 125 civilians were rescued and moved to safer places. With coordination from police and the mamlatdar office, all rescued residents were shifted to the relief centre operating at Sunrise School in Kosamba.
