PSI aspirant dies of cardiac arrest during recruitment test

Surat: Just moments after crossing a crucial milestone towards his dream of becoming a police sub-inspector, a 25-year-old recruitment candidate from Kutch collapsed and died after completing the 5-km running test in Bharuch on Thursday morning.The deceased, Ravirajsinh Jadeja, had appeared for the physical test for the police sub-inspector (PSI) and Lok Rakshak Dal (LRD) recruitment.After finishing the race, Jadeja complained of severe breathlessness and was given primary treatment by medical teams stationed at the venue. As his condition worsened and he lost consciousness, he was rushed to Bharuch Civil Hospital, where he died of cardiac arrest during treatment.Bharuch superintendent of police (SP) Akshayraj Makwana told TOI, “His father informed us that he had practised extensively for the exam and completed the 5-km run in just 21 minutes, well within the stipulated limit of 25 minutes. The post-mortem report suggested there was some blockage in his heart.”Jadeja’s father, Mahendrasinh, is an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with the State Reserve Police (SRP) and is currently posted in Vadodara. Jadeja lived with his father in the city and had travelled to Bharuch for the examination. He had earlier appeared for a similar physical test at the same ground during the previous recruitment drive but had failed to clear it.Bharuch police have registered an accidental death case and initiated an investigation.Cardiologist team to be deployedIn the wake of the incident, Bharuch police have decided to deploy a cardiologist-led medical team at the venue. “We have received support from Apex Cardiology Hospital in Bharuch. The hospital will station a team, including a cardiologist and support staff, at the ground from Friday. This will help us respond better to medical emergencies and prevent serious incidents,” an official said. The police recruitment drive began on January 21, with around 800 to 1,200 candidates appearing daily for physical tests at the Bharuch ground over a 44-day schedule.
