Trapped In Sextortion, Man Duped By Friend Too | Surat

Surat: Cybercrime sleuths in the city arrested a 31-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly duping a textile trader for Rs 17.62 lakh. The victim got trapped in a sextortion racket and upon seeking help from a friend who introduced himself as a cop and part of National Crime Investigation Bureau (NCIB), he got duped further.
Police arrested Manoj Sharma, a resident of Godadara, who allegedly duped the victim as a friend and booked him for posing as a government officer, extortion, forgery and other offences under the Indian Penal Code. The police will now try to recover the money from the accused.
The victim received a message on WhatsApp in August 2022 from a person who introduced herself as Anjali Sharma. The victim started chatting with the woman who later shared her obscene images and video. The victim too shared his private videos.
Using the video, the accused started demanding money and threatened to make the video viral if not paid. The victim paid a total Rs 11,000 to the accused through mobile wallet in two transactions. Later when the demand for more money continued, the victim contacted his friend Sharma, who was working as a textile broker.
Sharma told the victim that he recently got recruited by the city police and part of a special agency. Sharma assured the victim to solve the issue and later started demanding money by intimidating that based on the video Delhi police can arrest him. Believing Sharma, the accused started paying cash. “Recently the complainant realised that his friend Sharma is misleading him hence he contacted police and lodged a complaint,” said the police.
