Surat: Water supply was disrupted across several parts of the city on Saturday due to repair work on a damaged main pipeline on Ring Road near Falsawadi. The repair work continued until Saturday evening, after which Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials said water supply was gradually restored.The major pipeline was damaged during construction of a flyover bridge under the Multi Modal Transport Hub (MMTH) project on Ring Road. The damage occurred during foundation and piling work a few days ago, following which a temporary repair was carried out. However, as the damage was not adequately fixed, a significant water leak was reported, necessitating fresh repair work.The MMTH project is being developed by Surat Integrated Transportation Development Corporation Limited (SITCO). SMC officials said this was the second instance of the pipeline being damaged during the construction work. “The water supply pipeline is barely a foot away from the piling site. Due to the close proximity, it was damaged during excavation,” a SITCO official said.Given the extent of the damage, the civic body’s hydraulic department had planned a day-long shutdown of water supply in the central zone and informed residents in advance. However, due to the interconnection of pipelines across zones, the disruption extended to several other areas of the city.“As per the plan, water supply was stopped in the central zone, but due to pipeline connectivity, water continued flowing towards the damaged section. To prevent further leakage, supply had to be halted in additional areas,” a hydraulic department official said.While several localities faced a complete shutdown, others received partial water supply. Officials said repair work has now been completed and water supply is being restored in a phased manner.
