Maha Man Dupes Builder For 35l With Crypto Lure, Held | Surat

Surat: Crime branch sleuths arrested a 24-year-old accused from Pune in Maharashtra on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in cheating a city-based builder for Rs 35 lakh. Accused Nishith Jethwa introduced himself to the complainant Gaurav Salar as a software engineer promising him double returns against investment in cryptocurrency.
The accused came in Salar’s contact through common friends and claimed that the investment in cryptocurrency can give double returns in a short period. Trusting him, Salar gave Rs 35 lakh in September 2021.
After a few months, when Salar demanded his money from Jethwa, he couldn’t repay and then, changed his residence without informing Salar before disappearing.
The complainant searched for Jethwa himself, but after failing to locate him approached the police.
A complaint was lodged in Varachha police station on Tuesday and the economic offence cell of the crime branch too joined the investigation. The police traced the accused in Maharashtra and arrested him.
The police are questioning accused Jethwa to find out if he had invested the money or spent it for personal use. They are also investigating if the accused had taken money from other investors too promising them high returns.
