Surat: Pal police arrested a 39-year-old doctor after his car rammed into a tempo near Umra bridge on Thursday night, injuring five people.The accused, Dr Viralkant Chaudhary, a plastic and vascular surgeon, told police that he had not slept well due to work pressure and may have dozed off while driving. However, police collected his blood samples and sent them for laboratory analysis to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol.Police said Dr Chaudhary had gone to Sudeep Hospital earlier in the evening to assist in a surgery. While returning, he allegedly fell asleep as his car approached the traffic signal at the Pal end of the Umra bridge.“Dr Chaudhary’s car rammed into a tempo as he approached the signal. The tempo had two women and a driver, who sustained injuries. Due to the impact, the tempo collided with vehicles standing ahead, resulting in injuries to two more persons,” ACP Sweta Daniels said.The injured were identified as Himmat Boricha (45), Bhavika Chudasama (32), Parul Rathod (35), Manisha Rathod (40) and Prakash Singh (35). Police said none of them suffered serious injuries.The impact of the collision was strong enough to deploy both airbags of Chaudhary’s car. The doctor also sustained minor injuries to his hand.A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.
