Diamonds worth Rs 8 lakh stolen from trader’s office in Surat | Surat

SURAT: Police booked an unidentified man at Varachha police station on Monday for allegedly stealing diamonds worth Rs 8.56 lakh from a diamond trading office in Thakor Dwar society. The accused stole the valuables during the early hours on Monday. Ironically, the office owner had not kept the diamond packets in a safe but in the drawer of a desk that was not locked.
The movement of the accused has been caught on the CCTV camera. The footage shows the accused calmly looking for diamonds in the office and carrying out the theft without getting panic. He entered the office after cutting an iron grill.
The complaint was lodged by Bharat Dhola, owner of the office. Police are examining the CCTV footages of the office and outside to identify the accused.
“We have identified a suspect with similar looks. It seems like an act of a habitual offender. We are working to nab him,” said a police officer.
“It is surprising that the office owner did not keep the diamonds in a safe. If the diamonds had been kept in the safe, it would have been impossible for the accused to steal it,” said police.
It is difficult to enter diamond units or offices by breaking the door or window due to tight security arrangements. In most diamond theft incidents registered in the past, the involvement of employees was found and theft by an outsider was rare.
