Cyber Crime Detections Double In Two Years In City | Surat

Surat: The detection rate of cybercrime in the city has doubled from 36% in 2020 to 60% in 2022, reveals the latest data released by the police.
However, police officials claim that due to a lack of awareness, people are becoming victims of new methods of cyber fraud.
Out of 376 offences registered under the Information Technology (IT) Act in different police stations, 218 have been detected. In 2021, 126 offences (46%) were detected out of 272 registered, and in 2020, 71 cases (36%) were detected out of the total 192.
Apart from detection, police have helped 116 citizens get back Rs 95.63 lakh lost in cyber fraud between 2020 to 2022. In these frauds, the complainants did not register an FIR as they got their money back through prompt action by various preventive steps of police and concerned authorities that include banks and central cybercrime preventive agencies.
Further, the cybercrime cell has initiated a process to recover Rs 1.60 crore from 859 complainants who have lodged complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP).
“Due to the focused efforts of the city police and cybercrime cell, we have been able to improve our performance in detecting cybercrime. Police commissioner Ajay Tomar has appointed dedicated teams and nodal officers in each police station to deal with these cases,” said YA Gohil, assistant commissioner of police, cybercrime cell.
Gohil said they have conducted 4,000 seminars for citizens and distributed books for awareness.
“Still, the mobile phone users have to be alert as the scamsters are continuously changing their modus operandi regularly,” said Gohil.
