Surat: A 50-year-old unemployed man allegedly strangled his wife to death following a domestic dispute at their residence in the Varachha area of Surat on Oct 7. Varachha police arrested the accused within hours of the crime.The accused, identified as Sanjay Patel, allegedly got into a heated argument with his wife, Usha Patel, over domestic issues at their home in Tankli Faliya. According to police, the couple lived with their children and frequently quarrelled over household matters.The incident came to light when their son, Nikhil Patel (23), returned from work on Thursday evening. His parents had been alone at home during the day. He found his mother lying on the bed and his father sitting outside the house.When Nikhil tried to wake his mother, she did not respond. He then called his sister and neighbours, who attempted to revive her by sprinkling water on her face, but in vain.On examining his mother, Nikhil noticed black marks around her neck. Suspecting foul play, he called the 108 ambulance service. Usha was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead.The marks on her neck prompted a postmortem examination, which revealed that she had been murdered. When questioned by his son, Sanjay allegedly confessed to killing his wife.Following the incident, Varachha police registered a murder case against Sanjay under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and arrested him.
