Surat: A garment vendor selling clothes on from pushcart was shot by a bullet fired accidentally by a police sub-inspector who was cleaning his service pistol at Nana Varachha police chowky on Saturday.The shooting occurred when PSI P S Makwana, posted at the Nana Varachha police chowky of Kapodra police station, was cleaning his pistol. Police said Makwana, who has more than 23 years of service, was trying to remove a bullet stuck in the chamber when the weapon went off.The bullet first struck a water jug inside the chowky, changed trajectory, and hit Arvind Patel, the garment vendor outside, in the back.Senior police officials visited the chowky after the shooting and began an inquiry.“Preliminary findings indicate that the bullet was fired accidentally while the PSI was cleaning his weapon. The victim is injured but safe and has been declared out of danger by doctors,” said Alok Kumar, deputy commissioner of police, Zone I.
