Surat: Heavy rain in South Gujarat and adjoining states disrupted rail traffic on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route as Western Railway was forced to cancel more than 50 trains and short-terminate an equal number at various stations. The disruption was due to water flowing at the danger level at the bridge between Gholvad and Umbergaon railways stations, the Sanjan Yard bridge and the Udvada-Vapi bridge. Water has almost reached the platform level at the Billimora yard.Western Railway PRO Anubhav Saxena told TOI : “The disruption started in the morning with water reached the danger level at the bridge between Gholvad and Umbergaon at 4.45am. The same thing happened near the Sanjan Yard bridge at 6.50am. In both cases, we ran trains at slower speeds of 10-15kmph according to protocol. However, with the situation worsening, many trains had to be short-terminated. When water levels much higher than the tracks at Bilimora yard, traffic came to a complete halt.”The cancelled trains included Vande Bharat, Karnavati Express, Tejas Express, Vadadara-Bharuch Memu, Bandra-Nizamuddin Garib Rath, Bandra-Ahmedabad Lok Shakti, Mumbai-Delhi Tejas Rajdhani and the Mumbai-Jaipur Superfast.The short-terminated trains included Chandigarh-Bandra, Hanumangarh-Dadar, Ahmedabad-Dadar, Jaipur-Bandra, Bhuj-Bandra, Bhuj-Dadar, Hazrat Nizamudin-Bandra and Indore-Mumbai. They were short-terminated at stations such as Ankleshwar, Navsari, Valsad, Nadiad, Udhna and Utran.The Jodhpur-KSR Bengaluru and Thiruvananthpuram-Nizamuddin trains were diverted on the Surat-Udhna-Paldhi-Jalgaon route. After the cancellation and short-termination of the trains, the railways arranged food, tea, water and other things for passengers. Refunds were also initiated for passengers who did not want to continue beyond the short-termination destination.
