Surat: There was a chaotic situation at Surat district collector’s office on Saturday, when candidates of both the BJP and the AAP arrived to file their nominations for the Surat Municipal Corporation election.Supporters of both parties gathered in large numbers outside the collector’s office, shouting slogans in favour of their parties. Many workers were seen in party caps and scarves, while others carried placards and flags, creating a charged atmosphere at the venue.The situation turned tense as some workers and police personnel tried to keep supporters of the two parties away from each other to prevent clashes.Amid the commotion, a woman AAP worker allegedly attempted to drink phenyl after learning that her name was missing from the voters list. She said her name was on the voter list for past elections but was absent from the revised list. Police intervened in time, stopped her from drinking the substance, and rushed her to hospital.The woman alleged that her complaints on the issue were not heard.On whether the woman had submitted a written application for inclusion of her name during the period when the voters list was displayed for public verification, AAP leaders did not give a clear response.The incident added to the chaos at the venue, where heavy political mobilization by both parties had already led to a tense and disorderly scene.There was a heavy traffic jam around Athwa Gate as AAP workers arrived at the office, forming a rally. Due to ongoing metro work, the road is already narrow, and the rally created a massive traffic jam.
