Surat: Preliminary investigation into the shocking twin suicides of two college girls on March 6 night has revealed that the teenagers may have taken the extreme step after being heartbroken following break-ups with their boyfriends within a span of a fortnight.Senior police officials said the development came to light after investigators examined chats on the victims’ mobile phones and recorded statements of the two boys involved, both of whom confirmed that they had been in relationships with the girls. The two friends, aged 18 and 20, allegedly injected themselves with an anaesthetic drug in the washroom of Atmiya Sanskar Dham Swaminarayan temple in Saniya village under the Dindoli police station limits.Assistant Commissioner of Police N P Gohil said the chats indicated that both girls had been in relationships with the two boys. “Further inquiry revealed that one of the girls had been in a relationship for about two months, while the other had been involved for around one-and-a-half years. We called the boys for verification and both confirmed the relationships. They told police that they had stopped speaking to the girls following misunderstandings,” he said.Police said all four were originally from Maharashtra and were living in neighbouring societies in the Dindoli area. Investigators added that they did not find any threatening messages or evidence suggesting the girls were being intimidated.“We are awaiting the medical reports and the mobile phones have been sent for detailed forensic examination. Call detail records and other electronic evidence will also be analysed. The investigation will proceed based on the reports and evidence,” Gohil said.Police had found vials of drugs and syringes near the victims. One girl called friend after injectionDuring the investigation, police learned that after injecting themselves, one of the girls called a common friend. However, the friend was asleep at the time and could not answer the call. The victim then sent her a message asking her to inform her boyfriend’s sister about the step they had taken. Both searched AI tools for suicide methodsPolice said the victims had used AI tools to search for ways to die by suicide. Their search history showed queries related to rat poison, certain drugs and “help for death.” Investigators also found searches about alcohol percentage and the use of injections.
