Surat: Chikli police seized Rs 50 lakh in cash, including 18 notes of the discontinued Rs 2,000 denomination, during a routine check at Chikli crossroads, officials said on Sunday.Police sub-inspector FH Patel stopped a tempo coming from the Valsad side on suspicion of carrying liquor. On inspection, police found 30 plastic bags containing Rs 50 lakh in cash, along with 24 other parcels. The parcels included 2.28 lakh notes of Rs 10 (Rs 22.8 lakh), 1.16 lakh notes of Rs 20 (Rs 23.2 lakh), and 8,000 notes of Rs 50 denomination.Officials said all the notes were mostly fresh, with a small amount of soiled currency. Police suspect the cash was intended for circulation through the trade of fresh notes for commission. The consignment had been sent from Mumbai and was to be delivered to the Surat, Ahmedabad and Rajkot offices of a transport company.All notes were seized under the BNSS, and the IT department has been informed.
