Surat: The Malpractice Enquiry Committee (MPEC) of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) held a marathon sitting on Friday, where 131 of the 183 students summoned for alleged exam misconduct turned up for hearings. After recording their statements, university officials handed each of them a copy of the Bhagavad Gita — a symbolic reminder to encourage ethical conduct and refrain from malpractices in future exams. The cases ranged across a wide spectrum: possession of unauthorised written material (95), copying from such material (32), writing on hands or legs (8), scribbling on clothing, handkerchiefs or benches (23), using a calculator or electronic gadget (1), writing under a pouch (1), using content from ChatGPT (4), carrying a mobile phone (15), and other violations (4).AV Dhaduk, VNSGU’s exam controller, told TOI: “Of the 131 students who appeared, 14 required counselling from the Psychological Guidance and Counselling Centre. Their emotional state suggested they needed guidance. Recommendations on penalties have been submitted to the executive council and board of management. Punishment will be as per statute and may include fines or debarment from examinations.”
