| Somewhere during the Second Interglacial Period (400,000-200,000 BCE) homo sapiens appeared in India. This was the period of the Stone Age. The earliest remains of settled existence in India date to the end, of the fourth millennium. It took the form of small village settlements, sufficiently independent of each other to produce different types of pottery, and to dispose of the dead differently - some by burial, some by cremation, and some by partial cremation followed by burial. This suggests that from an early date a variety of cultures obtained. Evolution has been slow in the Indian continent and remarkably long. Change is often barely perceptible even in the late twentieth century, but even in the past an urban civilization could exist which hardly changed in hundreds of years. |
