| Prajapati |
|
Prajapati was the ' Lord of Beings '. He was Purusa - the huge primeval man who sacrificed himself to form the universe. He was thus the creator of all things; even the gods were his. children, and in later Hinduism he becomes the creator god Brahma. The concept of a being such as Prajapati, although representing only one of the many creation myths in Hinduism, is important because of its suggestive panentheism, the belief that all things come forth from one ultimate source and are of the same essence as that source and yet, the source is greater than its created parts. Thus, the Rug Veda states: This Purusa is all that have been and all that is to be: 'The Lord of Immortality which waxes greater by food.So mighty is his greatness; greater than this is Purusa. All creatures are one-fourth of him, three-fourths eternal life in heaven. |
