Director: Mahesh Manjrekar
Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Mahima Choudary, Om Puri
Sanjay
Dutt is back again, only two weeks after creating a storm with his performance
in Mission Kashmir. In that movie he played an army man, this time he dons a
uniform again, playing a police officer!
It's another hard-hitting move. As a
police officer, Sanjay Dutt is as good as they get. He believes in fighting
against crime, using honesty and resistance. However, the force is full of bad,
two-faced people who are the total opposite of Mr. Dutt. They know he will never
agree with their way of thinking, and are quite scared of him too! It's a
similar scenario with the criminals.
Sanjay is married to Mahima Choudary,
and although they love each other, their relationship is not amazing because
Mahima feels her husband loves his job more than her.
A terrible crime occurs in Sanjay's
territory. Two evil guys trap a girl in a hotel room and rape her. To make
things even more complicated, one of the guys is the son of the Chief Minister (Om
Puri).
Its time for Sanjay to fight for
what he wants in life…justice! However, Om Puri is not going to make things
easy for him, and will use all his power and contacts to make his son a free
man. Its time to find out who will come out stronger - truth and honesty, or
evil. It's a battle to the end.
Everybody knows that Sanjay Dutt and
director Mahesh Manjrekar have the potential to make onscreen magic. After all,
they already have a 'Vaastav' to their credit. However, you just need to read
the storyline above to find out that it is not original. Good cop fights the
system? YAWN!
It
should be enough to send anyone to sleep, but its not! Fans of Vaastav will
probably enjoy this movie aswell. Mahesh Manjrekar is a talented director and
knows how to make a decent film, so even though he has a typical storyline, he
can still make it watchable. The first half is definitely better, but the second
half isn't too bad either.
Although Sanjay Dutt was better in
Mission Kashmir, he has given another sound performance in this movie. As an
actor, he has improved no ends and that improvement continues with each new film
of his.
Mahima does not have an amazing
role, but handles it well. If you want to compare it to Vaastav, then she does a
better job than Namrata Shirodkar. Doing emotional scenes is one of her strong
points and this becomes apparent in Kurukshetra.
In conclusion, Kurukshetra faces
tough competition at the box office from Mohabbatein, but has stood its ground.
The fact that it is a completely different film should work to its advantage.
