Windows 95/98

  Win98 reboot

If you ever want to reboot just Win98, and not your whole machine, create a shortcut and use the following text as your Target in the Properties of the  shortcut: C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE  user.exe, ExitwindowsExec
This saves the trouble of having to go through the whole reboot of your system when you only want to restart Windows.

  Aligning drop-down menus

All dropdown menus can be aligned to the right. This feature becomes useful when trying to access menus with submenus that appear directly to the right. Open the Registry editor ( e.g. regedit.exe ) Go to \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Create a string entry called "MenuDropAlignment". Set its value to 1. Reboot

Background Bitmap Where You want it

Normally, the only options for displaying a background bitmap are titled, centerd, or stretch to fit (with the Plus Pack). You can edit the registry and have a third option, which is to place the bitmap anywhere on your screen by specifying the X and Y co-ordinates.
Start Regedit. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop. Create new strings call WallpaperOriginX and WallpaperOriginY. Give them values to position them around your desktop. The Bitmap must be smaller than your desktop size.

You don't have to open every document you want t to Print. Instead, add your favourite printer to the Send To Menu accessed when you highlight a document in Windows explorer or MY Computer.
After this you will be able to print the document with just a click of the mouse. To list your printer on the menu, go to Windows Explorer and select the Send To Folder in the Windows Directory.
Create a shortcut for your printer there and next time you access the Send to Command, Your printer will be one of the options. You also can put a shortcut for the printer on your desktop and then drag and drop documents on to it to print them.

  TimeOut!

When you shut down Windows (95/98), the graphical user interface is the first to close, files like DLLs, VXDs and OCXs etc. Require some time to be unloaded
If you want your system to shut down faster, decrease the default setting. Start Regedit and go to :
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\WaitToKillServiceTimeout
Check the Default string in the right pane. If it is blank or does not hold any value, Windows uses the default time-out of 20 seconds. To Modify it, double-click on Default, and type the integer you want to set as the delay ( in seconds ).

Note : If you are using time sensitive or critical application, you may want to increase the timeout value, and avoid my potential system error.

  Change default extentions

By default WordPad saves the file with a DOC extension and NotePad saves it with TXT extension. However, to accommodate long extension like october.chip in Notepad, you have to save the file using the File > Save as... dialog box. Even then you could land up with default extension "txt" being suffixed to the file name specified for example, october.chip.txt. To avoid this, enclose the file name that you want to save in quotation marks: "october.chip"

The Swap secret: Increase system speed

If you have two physical hard drives in your system, you can boost performance by placing your Windows swap file on the Second drive. Before you place Windows swap file on the second hard disk, ensure that it is completely empty. This places the swap file at the beginning of the disk and minimizes seek time. Defrag the drive using full optimisation to eliminate pockets of space that may fragment the swap file. Set the Swap file size to 2.5 times to the installed RAM. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. Click on Performance tab > Virtual Memory and select `Let me specify my own virtual memory settings'. Select the second hard disk. Restart the computer after the settings are completed.
