PRESENTATION SKILL

b. Organising

Next, after you have decided the coverage of the topic, you need to generate and structure your thoughts. Following steps will help you organise your ideas and thoughts.

The magic formula :
             1H + 6W = complete coverage + great structure
             How
             Who
             What
             When
             Where
             Why
             Which

When you answer these questions, at once you cover each and every aspect of the topic.

Idea Pad :

An idea pad is a collection of ideas on paper. While you are preparing for any presentation, you start getting ideas as you work. Jotting them all down in a separate pad is a good habit. A good idea is a good idea if it has been retained.

Sequencing :

To present your thoughts in a sequential manner, 2 techniques can be adopted :
      i. Lead the audience step by step to the final conclusion.

Start building up on a situation with the help of a relevant example. In the end pack in the conclusion.
ii. Present the conclusion first and then put forward data or matter to substantiate it.

Assembling :

After this the next step is to put together all the data, the facts, the graphics and come up with a meaningful sequence. Get the focus of the presentation right. Differentiate data that

must be presented    -  data that is critical to the presentation
should be presented -  adds value to the presentation
is nice to presented   -  it would be nice to include, but would not really turn heads for you

Obviously the focus should be more on the `must', a little on the `should' and even less on the `nice'.

This classification comes in handy when a presentation needs to be shortened for time constraints.
