THE GD PROCESS
In this section we will take a quick look at how a GD actually gets
conducted. The commonly followed procedure is:
1. Numbers of participants: Normally in a GD there are 4 to 8
participants.
2. Assigning of numbers: Each participant is assigned a number. These
numbers are in a
serial order.
The participants are then addressed as Mr. 3 or Mr. n,
whatever the
number maybe.
3. Wearing the
number tag: Since it is quite difficult for all the participants to
remember everyone
else's numbers, each one is given number tag which makes it
easy for
everyone to
identify each other.
4. Starting the discussion: The participants are instructed not to
disclose their names
or speak in
any other language other than English. However sometimes Hindi may be
allowed. The selecting
officer or the examiner does not decide who will start the
discussion or
how much time
should be taken by each of the participants.
5. Sitting arrangement: All the participants are made to sit around a
table in a manner
whereby
everyone can see each other.
6. Topics: The examiner may give two or three topics for discussion out
of which one
is chosen
by the participants themselves or they are at will to choose their own
topic with mutual
consent.
7. Role of the examiner: As soon as the discussion begins, the examiner
goes into the
background,
leaving the candidates alone. He takes notes on individual performance
and observes
each candidate very keenly.
8. Group leader: No one is appointed as a group leader as such. The
candidate endowed
with naturalleadership
qualities automatically emerges as the leader and assumes
leadership.
9. Type of topics: As a practice at feast two topics are announced by
the examiner.
The nature of the topic may vary from being light hearted like `Love Marriage v/s
Arranged Marriages' or
to a slightly serious topic like `India's Economic and Defence
Policy'
SUCCESS AT GROUP DISCUSSIONS
One of the most common mistakes that is made by students is to
thir'~:
that a group discussion is an arena for showing how much of knowledge
you save on the topic of discussion. It is certainly very important that
you know the topic of discussion inside out. However, that is not
entirely what the selecting off?~er is looking for. How, you will
conduct yourself in a group is equally, if not more, important. In the
following section the guidelines to achieving success at group
discussions are given.
1. Have a clear strategy.
As soon as the topic for discussion is decided, you must quickly make up
your mind as to whether you are going to speak in favour or against the
topic. You should also think of the arguments that you will put forward
to support your thoughts or what you feel. Suppose the topic for
discussion is `Arranged marriage v/s/ love marriage'. Not only do you
have to decide whether you are in favour of arranged marriages or love
marriages, you also have to decide what you will have to say in order to
support your choice. You should have the capacity to try and convince
the members of your point of view.
