The Sporting Life

India, for the sporting man or woman, is a happy hunting ground. 'Shikar' is a term which
covers all forms of hunting, whether it be big. game or small fish-in mountain, forest, plain or swamp.

Some of the most celebrated shikar-country is at the foot of the Himalayas, where Jim Corbett shot his tigers-but visitors do not necessarily have to concentrate only on man-eaters as he did. A keen hunter can choose between tiger, leopard, bison or deer. For those who would brave the heights, there are bear, wild mountain goat and sheep- or higher up still, perhaps, snow-leopard.

Duck, partridge, goose or snipe abound in the plains in the right seasons. In the high mountains, there are ptarmigan and snow-cock, or the Indian pheasant. Pigeon and quail abound in forest and hills.
Crocodiles, sometimes of enormous size, inhabit many rivers and p.rovide handsome cases, handbags and shoes for the hunter's wife.

Fishing of all kinds is available-the mighty mahseer, trout.in the famous streams of Kashmir, a 1.8-metre (sixfoot), 136-kg. (300-Ib.) goonch and many others await the wielders of rod, reel and lure.

Expeditions can be arranged for all types of shikar, and a list of recognised outfitters is kept up-to-date by the Tourist Bureau.

For those whose weapon is a camera, or who wish safely to observe wild life, there are a number of sanctuaries, of which the following a're particularly well known :

Gir Forest-Gujarat : Here is the only place where the Indian lion can be found. At the beginning of this century, it was at the point of extinction and has now been saved by protection.

Corbett Park-Uttar Pradesh : This Iies in the beautiful foothills of the Himalayas and is the haunt of tiger, leopard, deer and sambhar, also hyena, jackal and wild elephant.

Mudumalai and Bandipur - Madras and Mysore : A river divides these two sanctuaries where a very large selection of animals and birds is to be seen perticularly fine, are the herds of wild bison and spotted deer. Excellent  motor roads link up observation point and towers.

Kaziranga-assam: This is the only home of the  one-horned Asian rhino; here again, protection has saved a rare beast fxom extinction. Other animals in this sanctuary include wild buffalo, sambhar, swamp deer and wild elephant.

Besr season : November-April. Periyar-Kerala: The wild life is found here among the scenery of one of the most beautiful parts of India. Motorboats carry visitors across the lake or along the waterways to points of easy viewing.

Trips on elephant-back, by motor vehicle or boat usually take place in the early morning or evening when wild life moves in search of food.

There are many other sanctuaries, scattered over the country, including several for birds.

In most places accommodation can be arranged for short or long visits.

Other Sports : There is plenty of relaxation to be found on India's golf courses and tennis courts or in swimming pools and the sea. For those who favour the horse, there is polo. and even hunting (after jackal).

For the really .intrepid, there is pigsticking. In the big cities there are splendid race courses.

Mountain climbing, trekking, skiing and skating are all to be found among the Himalayas.

Most of other sporting interests can probably be catered for somewhere in the land.
